Howard County is getting ready to start a new construction project in our neighborhood. The three-way stop at the intersection of Daisy Road, Ed Warfield Road, and Union Chapel Road will be converted into a four-way stop. Construction to make this conversion was scheduled to begin Oct. 19.
Pavement markings will be changed to reflect the new traffic pattern. Several traffic control islands will also be constructed. The streetlight at this intersection will also be upgraded. The project should be completed by Friday, Oct. 23.
There will be flagging operations in place to direct traffic, as well as message boards. More importantly, please remember that once construction is done, everyone will have to stop at this intersection.
The Western Howard County Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will be starting its organizational activities in preparation for next year's Relay. Last year, this Relay raised more than $97,000 for research, education, advocacy, and patient services.
The goal for 2010 is to have 35 teams with 500 participants and a goal of $100,000. If you're interested in helping to organize this worthwhile community event, go to www.relayforlife.org/westernhoward.
There's a great community event coming up Oct. 31. The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble is hosting the Freiburg Community Jazz Ensemble from Germany at 3 p.m. in the high school auditorium. All are welcome for a free afternoon of great jazz!

Birdwatching can turn into a great hobby. In fact, I worked with a man who traveled all over the world doing his birdwatching.
I'd like to congratulate my neighbor, Diana Cullum, for the Maryland 4-H Horse Program Volunteer Award that she received at the Maryland Horsemen's Party.
Diana with her husband, Bud has worked for many, many years teaching, training, and mentoring 4-H youth. They have many children, now grown, who always come back to see them.
I could tell that they take great pride in seeing the wonderful young adults that they have helped to shape into the people they are today, with careers and families.
Bud and Diana were also those surrogate parents to my own daughters and helping to instill in them the ethics and morals that make a good family.
Congratulations, Di. I know I speak for many people in our community when I say, we're very proud of you and love you very much.
