As many of you know, Mt. View Middle School student Vincent Woodward and his mother, Jennifer Kim, died in a tragic car accident on Route 32 this past June. Now the community plans to commemorate their lives through a garden memorial at the Howard County Conservancy.
The John L. Clark Arboretum Honors Garden offers several types of memorials, including perennial flower beds, ornamental trees and flowering shrubs, shade trees, teak benches, stone walls, and gazebos. To learn more, go to www.hcconservancy.org/honGarden.php.

Theresa Bollard, an English teacher at Mt. View Middle, shares that the school recently established a program to recognize students who demonstrate PRIDE characteristics.

Next month, the Horizon Councils and the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County again present "Mean Girls: Queen Bees, Gamma Girls and Surviving the Female Hierarchy," led by Deborah West. This workshop offers a forum for mothers and daughters (ages 11-14) to discuss social and peer pressures on girls.
East Columbia Branch Library hosts the first program Nov. 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m., while the Miller Branch Library hosts the second Nov. 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Although the workshop is free, participants must reserve their spots in advance. Call East Columbia at 410-313-7700 or Miller at 410-313-1959.
For those unfamiliar with the host organizations, the Horizon Councils include groups from Elkridge, Ellicott City, Southeast Howard County and Western Howard County that advise the Horizon Foundation (www.thehorizonfoundation.org) about issues pertinent to their communities.
The Women's Giving Circle (www.womensgivingcircle.org) consists of female philanthropists who focus on the needs of women and girls in Howard County.

Glenelg United Methodist Church invites the extended community to attend the second in a series of free concerts Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. This performance features Brass of the Potomac, a group of 30 Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine musicians from the Washington metropolitan area. BOTP will perform a rousing selection of patriotic music, traditional hymns, and original works.

Remember that the Marriotts Ridge High School Mustang Stampede takes place Saturday, Oct. 31 at 9 a.m., rain or shine. Race-day registration runs from 8-8:45 a.m. and costs $25 per person for the 5k "Stampede and Scream" and the 1-mile "Zombie Walk." The "Zombie Parade," for young children, costs $5. All proceeds benefit the Marriotts Ridge Booster Club.
