Former Laurel residents Robert and Althea Smallwood celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 17. After being active in many Laurel community organizations for a number of years, the couple moved back to Robert Smallwood's home place in Grottoes, Va. They are both retired and enjoy time with their daughters, D. Elaine Mauri, Darlene Smallwood and Dona Smallwood-Carneal; three grandchildren, Danielle Smallwood, Lawrence Carneal Jr. and RJ (Robert) Carneal; and two great-grandsons, Chance Diaz and Jacob Bartley.

The couple was married Oct. 17, 1959 at Gladtidings Tabernacle (now Assembly of God) in Laurel, with Althea Smallwood's father, William Jones, officiating at the candlelight ceremony.
