Resurrection-St.Paul School celebrates with blue streak

Resurrection-St. Paul School will celebrate receiving the National Blue Ribbons School of Excellence award with 11 days of events and activities starting Nov. 1-11.

The school will host blue-themed activities for students, faculty, staff, parents and parishioners from the two Catholic parishes supporting the school -- the Church of the Resurrection and St. Paul's., both in Ellicott City. Resurrection-St. Paul was officially named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence on Sept. 15 by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

Exhibit, new book focus on 14 churches in county

The Franciscan Friary's Manor House will host an exhibition of the collection of oil paintings "Churches Never to Be Forgotten," during the month of November.

The paintings are the work of artist and author Shyami Codippily Murphy, of West Friendship. The 14 paintings were done in oil paint on cross-shaped canvases, depicting 14 churches in Howard County. The Franciscan Friary's Grotto was the seventh painting in the series.

Exhibition dates and times are: Nov. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29. from 2:30 to 5 p.m. A reception and presentation by the artist will be held Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. The friary is at 12280 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City.

The book, "Churches Never to Be Forgotten" depicting the paintings, history and photographs of these churches will also be available. Portion of profits from the book will benefit church outreach projects.

Murphy is also the author of "Farms Never to Be Forgotten," a collection of oil paintings and book that depicts the Western Howard County pastoral landscape.

5k walk/run supports Meals on Wheels of Howard

There is still time to register to lace up those sneakers in support of Meals on Wheels of Howard County.

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is a nonprofit organization that enables homebound people to eat well and remain in their own homes.

The Meals on Wheels of Howard County 2nd Annual 5K& 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk takes place at Sat., Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. at Meadowbrook Park, 5001 Meadowbrook Lane, Ellicott City, (off of Route 100). Last year, more than $6,000 was raised.

Registration for the 5K race is $25; $30 on race day. Race Day registration Nov. 7 is 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. The 1 Mile Family Fun Run/Walk is free for ages 9 and younger; $10 for ages 10 and older.

Ellicott Mills Brewing Co. hosts luncheon for veterans

The SSgt Karl G. Taylor Sr. Detachment 1084 Marine Corps League is celebrating Veterans Day by inviting local veterans to lunch Sun., Nov. 15 at Ellicott Mills Brewing Co., 8308 Main St., in historic Ellicott City from 1 to 4 p.m.

Veterans from all branches of service are welcome. Special guests will also be invited from Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed Army Medical Center and local Veterans Hospitals.

Veterans are invited to attend and meet with other veterans, old friends or make new ones. Children and spouses are welcome as well.

If you are not a veteran, you are still welcome to come out to say thanks to the veterans on hand.

The Marine Corps League Detachment 1084 will be picking up the tab for Vets and guests from Walter Reed and Bethesda and the VA hospitals.

The cost for civilians is $10, which the Ellicott Mills Brewing Co. is donating a portion to the Marine Corps League's Marines Helping Wounded Marines Program, which supports the wounded Marines and their families at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
