Congratulations to the Folly Quarter Middle School Jazz Bands -- the Gold Jazz Band, the Blue Jazz Band and the Jazz Combo -- who were recently recognized as one of the finest middle school jazz bands in the state. As a result, they have been invited to appear at the Maryland State Jazz Festival, as well as appearing in front of an audience of thousands in Baltimore.

You can download and hear original compositions by members of the Folly Quarter Jazz Combo on iTunes and hear all the ensembles on the Folly Quarter Middle School band Web site, www.follyquarterband.org.

In addition to the jazz bands recent recognition, several individual Folly Quarter students were recently accepted into various Howard County middle school honor ensembles.

Performing as part of the Howard County Middle School G/T Symphonic Band are Alicia Ouyang (flute), Jackie Cohen (bass clarinet), Selby Stout (bari sax), Karl Brown (trumpet), Bauer Xiong (trumpet), Chris Buckley (trombone), Gwynn Marsh-Armstrong (trombone), and Logan Faulconer (percussion). Rachel Derrenbacher and Emily Hawkes were both selected to be a part of the Howard County Middle School G/T Chorus. These band and chorus students will be performing in a concert Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at Howard High School.

Selected to participate in the Howard County Middle School G/T Chamber Orchestra are Rachel Kim, Thomas Wissman and Ashley Choe. Perfoming with the Howard County Middle School G/T Orchestra is Ryan Synk. Concerts for both of these orchestras will take place Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Marriotts Ridge High School and again May 1, 2010 at 7 p.m. at River Hill High School. Congratulations to all of these students for earning a spot in these county honor ensembles.

One of the things I look forward to about fall and winter are the seasonal fresh fruits that taste best this time of year. I have been getting my fill of fresh, locally grown apples and cider from local orchards, and have been patiently awaiting the cooler months, when I can get fresh Florida citrus.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, and the rest of the holiday season, the Glenelg High School Marching Unit is back with its annual Citrus Fruit Sale. The sale runs from November thru February, with a different offering of citrus each month. In November, the marching unit will be offering grapefruit, navel oranges, tangerines and a variety pack. Orders are due by Friday, Nov. 6 for fruit to be picked up at Glenelg High School Nov. 21.

Order forms are available from the Glenelg High School office, by calling Cindy Desrochers at 410-489-4977 or e-mailing fruitsales@glenelgbands.com, or by downloading from the Web site at www.glenelgbands.com.

Looking for something fun to do as a family in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving? Why not participate in the Glenwood Community Center's Turkey Trot Family Fun Walk/Run?

Families are invited to enjoy an early morning 1-mile walk/run Nov. 14 beginning at 8 a.m. All participants who complete the course will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to help with the purchase of turkey. Three winners will be selected. The event will take place rain or shine. For additional information, please contact the community center at 410-313-4840.

Students at Glenwood Middle School are currently participating in an electronics recycling fundraiser called Ecophones. All money raised during this recycling event will be donated to the Howard County Animal Shelter.

The students would love the support of the community, by donating your old electronics (broken or not). Ecophone collection boxes are currently located in the front office of Glenwood Middle School, as well as the Glenwood Community Center and Glenwood Library.

Items you can donate include ink jet cartridges, cell phones, iPods/mp3 players, laptops, cameras/video cameras, and video game consoles.

For additional information, go to www.Ecophones.com. The Ecophones Recycling Group thanks you in advance for your support.
