Earlier this fall, I started noticing the signs popping up around Glenwood for barbecue. Many nights as I picked my son up from football practice, I was tempted to stop. You may have noticed the signs, too.

Smokin' Hot! Pit Beef & 'Q has entered into a venture with St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, in Glenwood. Smokin' Hot! has set up its barbecue trailer right behind the church, at 2892 Route 97.

Pit beef, pulled pork barbecue and ribs, along with Panini sandwiches, soup and other daily specials are sold from the trailer. In better weather, picnic tables are set up to enjoy some outdoor dining.

The business is operated by Brett Arnold, of Glenwood, and Scott Quinn, of Woodbine. Both are parishioners of St. Andrews, and have children who attend our local schools.

Brett is a professionally trained cook, who has previously owned a restaurant, but prefers to prepare food and not get bogged down in the "business" of running a business. That is were Scott comes in, taking care of business, leaving Brett to do what he does best...cook!

And cook he does. Everything at Smokin' Hot! is homemade, from the barbecue sauces right down to the croutons for the salads. In addition to the barbecue trailer, Smokin' Hot! is also available to cater events that are more then a backyard barbecue -- fine dinner parties, weddings and other large events can all be taken care of by Brett and Scott.

Smokin' Hot! Pit Beef & 'Q is open year round Tuesdays through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. So the next time you are driving home trying to figure out what's for dinner, make sure to stop by and check out Smokin' Hot! Pit Beef & 'Q.

In my Oct. 29 column, I shared news of a special project the Spanish students at Folly Quarter Middle School were involved with in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Students were raising funds (more than $1,000 to date) to purchase school supplies for school children in another country. Unfortunately, I got my countries confused. The students were collecting funds to send school supplies to Ecuador. My apologies for the confusion!

On Nov. 7 members of the Glenwood Leo club participated in the second annual Glenwood Middle School Bike Drive. The Leo Club, a junior service organization sponsored by the Glenwood Lions Club, collected bikes for the Bikes for the World program. Bikes for the World collects unwanted bicycles and delivers them to community development programs to assist the poor in developing countries. The Leo Club thanks the community for their generous support of this bike drive.

Don't forget to stop by Glenelg United Methodist Church Sunday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. to enjoy a free community concert by the Brass of the Potomac. The Brass of the Potomac is comprised of 30 professional musicians from the Washington area, pulling its talent from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. The evening will feature patriotic music, traditional hymn settings, and challenging original works written just for this ensemble.

Glenelg United Methodist Church is at 13900 Burntwoods Road, in Glenelg.

Do you enjoy working outside, or would you like to learn about gardening? Both new and experienced gardeners are invited to register for the Master Gardener Training Program offered by the University of Maryland Extension, Howard County Office.

Training will cover plant, insect and disease problems, and a variety of other topics related to sustainable and environmental impacts of gardening practices.

Training is scheduled to begin Jan. 27 and run through March 31. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Extension Office in Ellicott City. Cost of the training is $195.

The mission of the Master Gardeners is to provide education to consumers; therefore, willingness to volunteer time is essential. Lack of hands-on experience in the garden should not deter potential applicants.

Anyone with a keen interest in gardening -- and especially those with other skills and interests, such as writing, graphics and computer knowledge -- is encouraged to apply.

The registration deadline is Dec. 18. Class size is limited. To receive a Master Gardener registration packet, call the University of Maryland Extension - Howard County office at 410-313-2707.
