Dave and Jill Krause, of Clarksville, raised slightly more than $30,000 for pediatric gastrointestinal research through a Nov. 7 free-throw fundraiser at Chapelgate Christian Academy, in Marriottsville.

The fundraiser was organized to support research through the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

The Krauses' son, Jacob, 9 was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis earlier this year.

The disease forced him to quit other sports, but hasn't stopped him from shooting hoops.

About 100 people, ranging in age from 6 to 70, participated in the free-throw contest. A total of 350 people attended the event, which included an auction.

Jacob kicked off the event with a successful free-throw shot, and went 13 for 15 shooting for his team, which was anchored by "celebrity" coach Phil Chenier, a former guard for the NBA's Washington Bullets.

Other celebrity team leaders included County Executive Kenneth Ulman, Washington Wizards television announcer Steve Buckhantz and former USA Today sports writer David Dupree.

The Krause family hopes to hold the event annually.
