Brock Bridge Elementary's PTA apparently held the first official snow dance of the year. On the night of Dec. 4, the school transformed into a winter wonderland with snowmen created by each grade's art class decorating the multipurpose room and hallway entrance. Festive lights lit the path to the doorway and snowflakes made by each of the 650 Brock Bridge students floated above the activity-goers heads, suspended in air by helium balloons. What a great invitation for the Saturday snowflakes. All of the students had a great time dancing to the DJ, snowball bowling and eating cookies with hot chocolate. Thank you to the wonderful parents responsible for putting together the fun night and thanks to Cathy Kazzi for heading up the team and Deborah Moseson for inspiring our artists.

Saturday's snow fall showed us all that winter is now upon us and as we draw closer to the holiday season, please take a moment to help those who are less fortunate. We can help by making donations directly to the local food banks or by contacting one of the local churches to make a food donation. Many neighbors may have already helped as the Girl Scouts of Service Unit 40 conducted a food drive Dec. 5 and 6 to benefit the local food pantries. On Saturday, the girls traveled through rain and snow to leave a food bag and note on all the neighborhood doors in Maryland City, Brock Bridge Estates and the Pines of Laurel. The girls then crunched through the snow on Sunday to pickup the bags of donated food. In all, approximately 60 Girl Scouts and their friends collected 3,157 pounds of food that were donated to a local church that provides help to 130 needy families during this holiday season. The Girl Scouts of Service Unit 40 thank the community for their generosity during this time of need (for a photo, read this column at www.laurelleader.com).

If you have a daughter interested in joining this great group of girls, please call Chris at 301-498-7599.

The Relay for Life team at Resurrection Church offers an opportunity for you to pick up some great holiday gifts while also contributing to a great cause. Members of the team are making beautiful bracelets with whatever design you wish. Each bracelet costs $20 and a part of the proceeds goes to the Relay for Life team. For more information, contact Connie at 301-725-3362.

The local schools also rejoice with joyful music during this season. Brock Bridge Elementary's chorus was scheduled to perform Dec. 9 and the band and orchestra perform on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Meade Middle School holds its chorus concert on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. and its orchestra and band concert on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. Finally, Maryland City Elementary holds its winter concert on Monday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. Congratulations to all of our student musicians. We look forward to hearing more about your beautiful concerts.

Also, Maryland City Elementary reminds all students about the fun PTA Pizza and a Movie Night scheduled for Friday, Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar to attend this fun-filled evening with your friends.

I am once again looking for nominations for the Maryland City holiday decoration contest. If you notice a home that has a great holiday appearance, please e-mail me the address and I will add it to my Christmas Eve column.

Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season and happy Hanukkah.
