Happy winter! Yes, winter will officially be here on Dec. 21. This time of year we see so many special things but nothing is more exciting than the Santa visits through our neighborhood brought to us by the Savage Volunteer Fire Department. Santa visits start Dec. 17 and will happen every night until Christmas Eve, as long as there are no emergency calls. If you hear the trucks with blaring sirens coming down your street, just go outside and wave to Santa and the volunteers.

The Savage Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 19 at 8925 Lincoln St. in Savage. To get more information about this well-attended event, call the station at 301-498-5061. The fire department is also selling live Christmas trees at the Weis at Route 1 and Gorman Avenue. Buying one of their trees not only benefits you, it also helps support a wonderful community organization.

This time of year brings many joys but it is also the worse time of year for fires. Please remember some simple tips to make your holiday safe and fire free:

Do not leave candles burning unsupervised; check all wires on your lights and decorations to make sure they are not frayed; do not leave your tree lights on while you are away; and make sure all live trees have plenty of water.

The International Center for Artistic Development is holding its fifth annual holiday gift show and sale at the Savage Mill through Dec. 31. Go by and see all the great ideas for gifts as well as how nicely the mill is decorated for the season.

The First Baptist Church in Savage is presenting "A Walk through Bethlehem" Dec. 18 to 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. The church is located at 8901 Washington St. in Savage.

The North Laurel Savage Multi-Service Center offers a variety of services to our community. It is a food bank distribution location, and offers counseling services and health assistance. The center will also be hosting several events for the community in January, as well as a financial counseling program each Thursday. A drop-in NAMI, or National Alliance on Mental Illness, support group will be starting on Tuesdays. The center will host Howard Community College Advising and Counseling Day on Jan. 9 and will see WIC clients on Jan. 16 and 30. For more information, contact the center at 410-880-5917 or drop by the center located at 9150 All Saints Road.
