North Laurel has many assets but one of the most important is the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center in the Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center. This center brings resources to our community that many of our residents need but could not get until the center opened. It is a combination of a multitude of organizations that work together for us. Not only is it a food bank drop location but it also houses the Howard County Department of Social Services, Grassroots Crisis Information Center, Legal Aid Bureau, HC Workforce Development, Parents as Teachers Program, Foreign Born Information and Referral Network, Domestic Violence Center, Family and Children Services, Community Action Council and Women, Infant and Children's Program (WIC). There are also a number of specialty events they host.
If you are in need of any of these services, or want to see if they can offer assistance to you, call the center at 410-880-5917. You can also drop in during business hours, Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., or Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Don't forget the meeting with WIC clients this Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Can't wait to start your gardening? Come out to the Savage Library in North Laurel on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. to attend "Gardening Under Glass." This free program will teach you how to extend your gardening season with cold frames, portable greenhouses and bell jars. This is a must-attend for all gardeners or future gardeners.
I hope all those parents with a child starting kindergarten have marked their calendar for Feb. 4. That is when Emmanuel Methodist Preschool is holding its workshop for parents of children going into kindergarten next fall. The workshop, Transition to Kindergarten, will feature Lisa Davis, early childhood program coordinator for Howard County Public Schools. The preschool is located at 10755 Scaggsville Road. For information, go to www.emmanuelpreschool.com, or call 301-725-5178.
If you don't feel like cooking this weekend, then plan to attend the Savage Boys and Girls Club U12 boys travel baseball team's annual spaghetti dinner on Jan. 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Savage Fire Hall. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children in advance, or $10 for adults and $7 for children at the door. Contact Stacy at SJSPI@aol.com.
Tai Sophia is offering several programs this winter. The institute is about to start some of its graduate programs and will also hold several seminars for health professionals. The very popular workshop on Redefining Health will be Feb. 6 and 7. If interested in any of these events, go to www.tai.edu, or call 410-888-9048, ext. 6611.
