One of the most exciting events that will happen in North Laurel is the opening of the North Laurel Park and Community Center. The Park and Center will be located off Whiskey Bottom Road between Route 1 and All Saints Road and should open at the end of the year or the beginning of next year.
This will bring so many wonderful activities to our area. Unless you have visited a community center in Howard County, you might not realize all that they have to offer.
The center is designed similar to the one in Glenwood so if you get a chance to visit that facility, you can see what we have in our future.
There will be classes of all kinds and for all ages, fitness programs, a new senior center and a teen club. These are just a few of the activities you will see.
It will house a gym, the health department, child care and the police department, art and dance studios.
The park will have open space and paths for walking but also sports fields, tennis and basketball courts, picnic areas and playgrounds.
For more information you can go to the Web site www.co.ho.md.us/RAP/RAP_NorthLaurelPark.htm.
Presently, Rec and Parks is looking for some skateboarders who would be willing to help design the new Skate Park that will be located at the park. If interested, call Phil Bryan, superintendent of recreation for the county's Department of Recreation and Parks, at at 410-313-1668 or e-mail him at pbryan@howardcountymd.gov.
The senior center and health department are located next to our library in the Bowling Brook area at this time. They will be leaving their site next to the Savage Branch library and many wonder what will happen to that space.
Do you have an idea? Some want the library expanded. Others want to use the building for something else. If you have an idea, call Councilwoman Jennifer Terrasa's office at 410-212-2001 or 301-621-4300, ext. 2001. You can also e-mail her at jterrasa@howardcountymd.gov.
Even though the center is not open yet, now is the time to make your voice heard on this matter.
Want to be in the know? Do you want to learn more about what's happening in the area? The North Laurel Civic Association is in the process of updating its e-mail list.
