Wow, August is just about here and that means that Tuesday, Aug. 3 is National Night Out Against Crime. This night was created to encourage communities to spend the night outside with your neighbors and the police to discourage criminal activity.
It is also a great excuse to have a party. The kick off will start at the Police Community Office located in the Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center and will be held 6 to 7 p.m. There will be food and giveaways and the event will give you a chance meet some of the local police officers and politicians. McGruff the Crime Dog will be there as well.
Then, the Emerson, Canterbury and the Birkenhead neighborhoods will hold parties of their own as well. I encourage everyone to show up at the Police Community Office and your local party and get to know your neighbors.
Remember that the North Laurel-Savage Multi Service Center moved from the Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center into their new location at 9900 Washington Blvd. (Route 1). It is located on the ground floor of the new apartment building, Patuxent Square Apartment Complex in Suite I. Its hours are Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
A community clean-up for the area is scheduled for Saturday, July 31. It will be held 9 to 11 a.m. and the meet up location is the courtyard outside of Rams Head Tavern, in the Savage Mill. For more information, call Elissa at 410-313-1175.
Do not forget to contact North Laurel's Rhonda Workman to get your tickets for Jammin for a Cure Aug. 7, 2-8 p.m. Rhonda is part of the Fitness Krased team that is raising money to beat cancer. For more information about these events or to join their team, e-mail Rhonda at workman301@verizon.net.
A great activity for these extra hot summer days is to clean out your closets. What do you do with those extra treasures that you no longer need? Well, I have the solution for you.
The youth group of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church is now taking reservations for those interested in a space in their annual Yard Sale on Saturday, Sept. 11. The cost is $20 for two spaces and $5 for each additional space and you are supporting a good cause. The money goes to youth activities at the church.
If you are interested, e-mail Elizabeth Blough at Eblough@comcast.net or call her at 301-604-6769.
The church is located at 12430 Scaggsville Road.
For those who are seeking treasures, do not forget to mark your calendars now.
With all these great activities in our area, no one can be bored with summer. I hope to see you out and enjoying all these great events.
