Scout beautifies school to finish Eagle project

Congratulations go to Jeffrey Smith for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Smith designed and built a walkway to a flower garden at Parrs Ridge Elementary School, in Mount Airy.

The project involved planting shrubbery and other plants and placing a bench on the site. Smth was aided by his fellow scouts of Troop 882, as well as his parents, Lawrence and Renee. Jeff the grandson of my good friends, William and Theresa Fisher. He is a senior at Mount St. Joseph High School and will be heading to college in the fall.

Howard Chapel-Ridgeville United Methodist Church will be holding its annual roast beef, fried shrimp and ham dinner Saturday, April 26 from 1-5 p.m. The family-style dinner includes dessert. The cost is $13 for adults and $6.50 for children, ages 6-12. Carry-outs are also available for $14.

The Julius Prezelski Basketball School will once again be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Camp dates are: Full day camp on June 25-27 for grades 3-8; Future Stars half-day camp July 9-11 for grades 1-3; and offensive half-day camp July 21-23 for grades 3-8. St. Michael's Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting its semi-annual Friendship Tea Party May 3 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the church's multi-purpose room. The menu includes; fresh-baked scones, cakes, tea sandwiches, salads, assorted teas and sweets.

St. James Nursery School is accepting registrations for its summer program. The program will last from June 23-Aug. 8 in one-week increments from 9-11:30 a.m. An extended day program is also offered from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Classes are available for children, ages 3-5. St. Michael's Catholic Church will be holding its monthly all-you-can-eat breakfast Sunday, April 27 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The menu includes; pancakes, scrambled eggs, muffins, bagels, hash browns, bacon, sausage, chipped beef with gravy and biscuits, baked apples and beverages. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children, ages 5-10.

Did you know that the Howard County government passed the bill that will create the framework for the establishment and operation of a public/private health care program?

The purpose of this program is to bring affordable access to health care for as many as 2,000 uninsured Howard County residents.

The Healthy Howard Plan will offer primary care services, discounted prescription drugs, in- and out-patient hospital care and specialty care services.

To qualify, county residents must make 300 percent of the poverty level or below, have been uninsured for one year and have resided in Howard County for one year.
