Flight school beckons Navy Midshipman

It's getting to be that time of the year when students will be graduating from various schools. The first one I'd like to mention was sent to me by Christina Carr, of Fulton. She is very proud of her granddaughter, Stephanie Motsay. Stephanie will graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, this month. After her graduation, Motsay will be going to flight school in Pensacola, Fla. Her parents are Sandra (Atholton, class of 1978) and Charles Motsay, of Baltimore.

I got an e-mail from Colleen Konstanzer, the ride coordinator for NeighborRide. One of her associates, Bonnie Hudak, from Grassroots, the crisis intervention center on Freetown Road, in Columbia, called and told her that she "was very grateful for the wonderful response from (my) readers."

Hudak told Konstanzer of the need for some new items for the newly renovated building into which the residents will start moving today. So, without any further ado, here's the list of new items that the shelter needs: bath towels, hand towels, twin sheet sets (fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillow cover), protective pillow covers, small bulletin boards (for residents' rooms). Now, here's the best part: you don't even have to use your own gas to get the items to the shelter.

You can call Hudak at 443-790-8862 to arrange for pick-up of donated items. Or, call me and I'll come by and pick the items up and get them over to her. Thanks in advance.

Let's hear it for Luke Roarty, a sixth-grader at Lime Kiln Middle School. Luke is a bicycle motocross racer and he was interviewed by WJZ-TV (Channel 13) May 6 about his sport. Luke will be leaving for China in a week where he will participate in a BMX bike race. Woo hoo, Luke! We're all pulling for you here!

Since it's past Mother's Day (by the way, happy belated Mother's Day to all you moms out there), you gardeners will no doubt start planting your outside gardens now.

Did you ever wish you had an expert to whom you could take a sick-looking plant or an odd-looking bug/grub/worm on one of your plants and get some information?

Well, here's your chance. The Howard County Master Gardeners will answer your gardening questions at the following libraries around the County during the gardening season: Glenwood Branch Library, Saturday, May 17. It's at 2350 Route 97 in Cooksville. The library phone number is 410-313-5577; the Savage Branch Library, May 24. It's located at 9525 Durness Lane, in Laurel. The library phone number 410-880-5975. The Saturday plant clinics are held from 10 a.m. until noon.

Well, that's all for now. Look after your neighbors. Remember our troops who are serving in harm's way. And their families. Commit a random act of kindness.
