High school prom season is in full swing, and Glenelg High School was one of the first of the prom season, on April 26. I was delighted to hear from Lisa Powers, who was kind enough to share a very interesting fact about this year's prom.
Powers' niece, Ashley McGlynn, was named this year's prom queen. The crown was a bit bittersweet. As Glenelg High School has been busy celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, the prom queen title has given McGlynn a chance for reflection. You see, 50 years ago, McGlynn's grandmother, Judy Pool, (many will remember her maiden name, Judy Helton), was a part of Glenelg High School's first graduating class, the class of 1959.
Not only that, but Pool was named Glenelg's first prom queen. 50 years later, her granddaughter now carries that tittle. How neat is that? McGlynn, who is a senior this year, is looking forward to attending James Madison University in Virginia this fall.
I recently heard from Glenwood resident Margaret Gatto, who is the Executive Director of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra. The MYSO has been busy rehearsing this spring, and is making final preparations for the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra's last concert of its 44th season.
The concert will take place Sunday, May 18 at 3 p.m. in the Fine and Performing Arts Theatre at the Community College of Baltimore County -- Catonsville (800 S. Rolling Road, in Catonsville).
The performance will feature guest soloist Jeffrey Silberschlag, playing Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Alexandra Pakhmutova. The program will also include Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy, Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B minor (Unfinished) and The Moldau by Smetana.
Tickets are $12 general admission, and $8 students and seniors (available at the door). For more information call 410 442-5645 or go to www.myso.info.
Students attending Howard County Public Schools have the day off tomorrow (Friday, May 16), why not let the kids spend the day hanging out at the library? The Friends of the Howard County Library will be sponsoring a double feature film screening at the Glenwood Branch Library. At 1 p.m., there will be a showing of "Daddy Day Camp," followed by a showing of "High School Musical 2" at 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
Youth ages 13-17 are invited to stop by the library again Tuesday, May 20 from 7 to 8:30 pm for a DDR dance off. Fans of the video game Dance Dance Revolution are invited to meet other DDR fans and compete to see who is the quickest dancer. Refreshments will be provided and no registration is needed. Call the library at 410-313-5577.
