The hulking driver from Connecticut was in a fix. A busload of touring, high school band member teens, whose ultimate destination was Annapolis. Trouble was, his bus needed emergency service. This is how driver Tony Carlson of New Britain, Conn. ended up spending several hours in our neck of the woods.
After depositing his charges at their hotel, the beefy driver headed over to Eyre Tour and Travel's bus depot on Triadelphia Road. "It's good, smart business," said Carlson of the ease with which the service people at Eyre's came to his rescue. "When you're on the road like I am, you have to have a good relationship with other bus services."
After leaving his bus for service at Eyre's, the capacious Carlson had time for a slice of pizza and even a buzz cut at a nearby salon. "Could you use a No. 2 blade on the trimmer?" That was the humble request of the gentle giant from Connecticut. "When you break down, it's great to know there's a place like Eyre's," a relieved Carlson said.
Newlyweds Stefanie and Brian Shurer are enjoying their busy first year of married life. The couple will celebrate their first anniversary in August. Late March found the duo immersed in a big move to Bel Air.
Redecorating, tending to their golden lab pup, Chester, and for Stefanie end of the year tasks associated with her third grade bundle of energy students at William Paca Elementary are enough to make the couple look forward to the calm of summer.
The annual spring fair at Glenelg Country School is about to begin. Labeled as a "Day of Joy" by founder David Weeks, the fair is held by ninth graders who host the young students of the Cedar Lane School. The high school student hosts have previously worked one-on-one with the often physically and mentally challenged youngsters thus design the entire spring fair around the special needs of these dear children. Fun, food, friendship and the beautiful boxwood laden campus of Glenelg Country School are the background basics for this delightful day Monday, May 19.
The Hare Raisers 4-H Club is hosting a double youth rabbit show at the Howard County fairgrounds May 24. Judging begins at 9 a.m. for a day of rabbit exhibition that will continue on until 4 p.m.
Refreshments, a table filled with raffle items and youngsters showing their well cared for rabbits. Now that's West Friendship.
If you would like to participate in this event, e-mail Wendy Feaga at wendyf1980@comcast.net.
Damon Krometis, Glenelg High Class of 2001, was recently in town with the touring company of the play "Molora." The play was performed at the University of Maryland's Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
This play was adapted and directed by Yael Farber of South Africa with whom Krometis has been working for the last year. Krometis has traveled to South Africa and England with this tour. We are delighted to continue to watch the progress of Krometis' career, who many will recall honed his skills early on at Glenelg High School.
The Church of the Resurrection, in Ellicott City, will once again be visiting its sister parish in El Salvador this June. The annual medical mission to San Bartolo is always a special time for parishioners.
The logo for the two parishes is Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo Brothers and Sisters in Christ. The parish is accepting donations in the San Bartolo Medicines box in the church link or hallway.
Urgently needed are children's vitamins, infant vitamin drops, adult cold and cough medicines, first aid creams, dental hygiene products and large suitcases (you guessed it, this is for transport of the medications).
If you would like to donate some medicines for the mission, call Gina Maclean at 410-465-9973.
A Healing Mass is scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at 3 p.m. at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road in Ellicott City. The friars will conduct the Mass in the Chapel of the Shrine. All are welcome.
Carl Perkins, Folly Quarter Middle School principal, invites parents for Coffee and Conversation, May 22 from 9 to 10 a.m. All are welcome.
Buy local. That's easy as pie when you have the delightful Howard County Government sponsored Farmers' Market at the Glenwood Branch Library parking lot set up every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jams, jellies, flowers, vegetables, honey, baked goodies. It's all there.
Have you started to weed the garden patch yet? If so, then you may have noted a few un-invited mainstays.
Come out to the Glenwood Branch Library May 22 at 7 p.m. when Master Gardeners Aylene Gard and Carol Filipczak will help you identify those pesky alien invaders.
This green thumb duo know everything there is to know about invasives, non-natives and those things that need to be pulled out of the garden immediately. Wish they'd do the demo in my yard where Vietnamese stilt grass is more prolific than the dandelions.
Note to parents. Howard County Public Schools are closed Friday, May 16. With that in mind a double feature is offered at the Glenwood Branch Library. "Daddy Day Camp" starts at 1 p.m. and "High School Musical 2" begins at 3 p.m. No registration or fee is required.
