The event is one of the school's major fundraisers each year and was part of its annual field day, said Sherry Mobley, the school's director of advancement. So far, this year's Race for Education has raised more than $24,000. Mobley said the deadine for donations is May 30 and the total amount could exceed $30,000.
The students collected pledges per lap for as many laps as they could run around the 1/4-mile track in one hour or straight donations. The Rev. Gerry Bowen, pastor at St. Augustine Church, and school principal Patricia Schratz both ran a bit with each group of students. Bowen completed 48 laps, or 12 miles.
