Wow! The golf tournament that was sponsored by the Fulton Elementary and Lime Kiln Middle School PTAs was a resounding success! The event raised more than $9,000 and will be split evenly between the two schools where it will be used for PTA-sponsored academic and cultural arts enrichment programs. Thanks to the players, the sponsors, the school principals, and teachers who came out and made the outing such a success.
The Lime Kiln Middle School band and orchestra went to the "Music in the Parks" competition that took place at Hershey Park, Pa., and here's what they won: eighth-grade chorus -- fourth place, good rating; concert band -- first place, excellent rating; wind ensemble -- first place, superior rating, awarded Best Overall Band; string orchestra -- first place, excellent rating; full orchestra -- first place, superior rating, awarded Best Overall Orchestra.
Greg Schuler helped organize the Reservoir High School Musical Madness 5k race that took place May 10 in Maple Lawn. The weather, as you may recall, was rainy and cool. A total of 228 people registered with 174 showing up at race day. Shuler figured that the no-shows were due to the weather.
The Maple Lawn community hosted the race with several businesses acting as sponsors. oZ Chophouse, the title sponsor, also provided the food for the post race festival with Reservoir music students providing entertainment.
The brass ensemble set the mood with the madrigal singers opening the race with a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. Ninety-six males and 78 females finished the 5k. Brian Allen, 19, was the top male finisher with a time of 16 minutes, 21 seconds, followed by Peter Keating, 42, who finished in 17:04 and Brian Pettit, 20, who finished 17:15. The top three female finishers were Vanessa Cox, 46, who finished in 19:50, Robyn Humphrey, 44, who finished in 20:09 and Kathy Bernetti, 46, who finished 20:39. Fourteen students and two music directors ran the race. Eric Schuler 17:58 (second, 15-19 male), orchestra, cross-country, track; David Shea, 23:27, band, track; Rachel Cooper, 23:38, (first, 15-19 female) orchestra, cross-country, track; Zach Hill, 23:42, band, choir, cross-country; Ryan Dorson, 24:30, band, choir, cross-country, track; Pamela Oliver, 24:37 (third, 15-19 female), color guard, track; Carissa Dorson, 25:54, band, choir, cross-country, track; Johnny Ruffa, 27:40, orchestra, band; Daniel Meiners, 27:57, band, choir, cross-country; David Trenner, 28:59, choir; Kristina Lerman, 35:41, band, choir; Matt Seiger, 36:34, band, choir; Julia Zeroth, 36:36, choir; Alex Dice, 40:56, choir; Greg Knauf, 30:44, director of choirs; and Matthew Dubbs, 32:21, director of bands.
Dubbs also has the distinction of being the most improved -- he cut 8:18 off his official 2007 time. Three other runners should also be mentioned: James John, 17:39 (first, 15-19 male) came from Milan, Ohio; Paul Kleinman, 24:39 (third, 50-59 male), came from Carlsbad, Calif.; and, Barbara MacMillan, 28:39 (1st, 60+ female), came from Carluke, Scotland. By the way, all of the above information came from Greg Schuler. Thanks, Greg.
A new slate of officers for the Reservoir High School Music Boosters were elected for the next school. They are: President -- Robert Dice; Vice President -- Christine Mitchell; Secretary -- Scott Schiller; and Treasurer -- Leo Garcia. Congratulations.
Erika Youd, of Highland, is very proud of her son, Greg Blaney. He is a freshman at Reservoir High School and he recently was named to the Dean's list for his 3.73 grade-point average. When I spoke with his mom, I could hear the ear-to-ear smile adorning her face.
"It's a start," Youd told me.
Bob and Denise Simmerly must be very proud of their oldest daughter, Colleen. Bob and Denise with their daughters Colleen and Haley are parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, in Fulton. Colleen was awarded third place in the kindergarten division of a nationwide competition that "encourages students to express their faith through art, poetry and prose." Colleen's artwork of St. Francis of Assisi was selected from 3,000 other submissions. Way to go, Colleen!
Happy Memorial Day. Drive carefully. Look after your neighbors. Remember our troops who are serving in harm's way and their families. Commit a random act of kindness.
