New Hampshire suits former west countian

A few weeks ago, there were still remnants of snow in the rugged area of New Hampshire where former West Friendship neighbor Nick Berg now makes his home.

Berg was in town to visit his three adult daughters and their families, all of whom live in the area. He shared pictures of his historic 200-year-old home in what can only be described as a picture-post-card New England town. Some of the photos from the winter of 2008 showed mounds of snow all the way up to the windows of the house. With so much snow, it's no wonder that Berg gets in as much skiing as he does. He loves the sport and even showed snapshots of a garden bench he crafted out of old wooden skis.

The town where he lives is very close to Maine. Berg is thriving in the land of mountains, long winters, quiet streets and beautiful gardens. A hearty hello from an old neighbor who was once a kind and sturdy presence as a resident of West Friendship.

Thanks go out from the members of the Unity Ag and Clover 4-H Club. The local 4-H was delighted to have a green thumb demonstration by Ginger Haulsee during the last meeting. Haulsee's advice on vegetable gardening got the club members off to a great start for their own vegetable patches. Some of the produce from these gardens may end up appearing for judging during the Howard County Fair in August.

The 4-H members also are grateful to Phyllis Duvall, of the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department, who gave a terrific and informative presentation on first aid. Thanks from the club members to both women.

"This year I promise not to tip the canoe," scout mom Lisa Colangelo said. Colangelo refers to the annual canoeing trip to Antietam National Park which Boy Scout Troop 007 is planning for the summer. The troop has a roster of six new scouts which includes Matt Bishop, Chris Conover, Cameron Coster, Ethan McNamara, Edward Taylor and Noah Van Blarcom. This past winter and spring, the current troop, including scout Louis Colangelo went skiing at Whitetail, hiked the Appalachian Trail and camped at Broadcreek Reservation.

Glen Harbin, chief purveyor of the snoball stand on the circle at Triadelphia and Ten Oaks roads, reminds the community "that little white trailer of his serves up the best natural healthy smoothies on the East Coast." The line of customers on any given afternoon seems to verify Harbin's claim.

More than a few West Friendship gardeners were heartened to see the "Open Weekends" sign at Dennis Whittaker's place on Route 144. Our most beloved West Friendship nurseryman has opened Whittakers on weekends through May. As can be expected, the bedding plants and perennials are of the highest quality.
