County schools to be dismissed on June 13

In case you haven't heard this from your school child, the last day of school in Howard County has been changed. In a recent note from Superintendent Sydney Cousin, the school year now ends June 13 with all schools closing three hours early on the 13th.

If you have a son or daughter graduating from Reservoir High School this year, then you'll need to know this regarding graduation. It takes place at Merriweather Post Pavillion Friday, May 30, 8-10 a.m. Your son or daughter should have already explained the parking pattern, but just in case they didn't give you the handout, here's the drill.

The parking entrance is either the south entrance or Broken Land Parkway; you'll leave by this same route. Park in the guest area parking lot. There are two handicapped parking areas: the primary lot is accessible from Little Patuxent Parkway between South Entrance Road and Broken Land Parkway (the old Box Office driveway); the secondary lot is in the guest parking lot, east side near the public walkway.

Now, if you're running late or have guests who cannot walk far, don't despair -- you can drop off your graduate or guest at the entrance to the old box office on Little Patuxent Parkway; pull up along the right hand curb, drop off your passenger and then turn right on South Entrance Road to the parking lot.

If you have any questions, call the school office at 410-888-8850. Congratulations to the Class of 2008!

Are you thinking about a summer camp for your child? The Howard County Recreation and Parks has a guitar and keyboard camp at River Hill High School this summer. At the camp, the student will learn how to play the guitar and/or piano. The camper will be using state-of-the-art equipment and the lessons will incorporate music technology, games and other fun activities. It includes ear training, music theory, reading music, composition and improvisation, creating musical masterpieces with GarageBand software (pretty cool), rhythm training utilizing percussion instruments, jamming and playing a variety of musical styles.

If you have your own guitar, bring it or one will be provided. For children ages 8 to 11, camp will begin July 7. For children ages 12 and older, camp will begin July 21. The camp runs for two weeks and costs $149. The guitar section runs 9 to 10:30 a.m. and the keyboard section is 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Register for both guitar and keyboard camps to increase the musical fun! Call Holly Harden at 410-313-460 for more information, or go to www.howardcountymd.gov/RAP.

From the Fulton Elementary School eSchoolNewsletter comes the following note: "Congratulations to Fulton staff members Donna Armanas, Liz Cerand, Andrea Collins, Sharon Kaye, Karen Manzone, Lisa Martinez, Katie Rhodehamel, Meghan Shaw, Anita Trainor, Laura Weir and Sara Wolfson on their recognition at The Special Education Community Advisory Committee 10th annual Teacher and Staff recognition for dedication, creativity and caring shown in the education of student with disabilities."

Don't forget the big Reservoir High School yard sale June 21, 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. One parking space is $15 (what a bargain) with each additional space a measly $5 more. To reserve your space, send an e-mail to RHSyardsale@comcast.net. You'll be supporting the Reservoir High School football team. Thanks in advance.

Well, that's all for this week. Drive carefully -- school will be letting out soon for the summer and the kiddies will be out in force in the neighborhoods. Look after your neighbors. Remember our troops who are serving in harm's way. And their families. Commit a random act of kindness.
