Savage Fest marks the start of summer fun

The 2008 Savage Fest Weekend is here at last! As always, there will be a kick-off parade Saturday, May 31 at 10 a.m. down Savage Guilford Road, so pull those lawn chairs out and get your curb-side spot. There will be entertainment, food and crafts on the grounds of the Carroll Baldwin Hall.

In addition, there will be lots of activities for the children, including carnival type rides. Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the day and will be worth wonderful door prizes. So be sure to save some time this coming weekend to stop by and enjoy the Savage Fest activities, entertainment and food.

In addition to the 2008 Savage Fest, the Savage United Methodist Church will be holding its annual Strawberry Festival. The SUMC members are preparing their famous chicken salad, barbecue beef and pit beef for sale either with a platter or as just a sandwich. In addition, there will be hot dogs for children.

The platters will consist of cole slaw, baked beans and drink. In addition to the great food, the SUMC members are offering their delicious strawberry shortcakes and ice cream topped with strawberries for dessert. So be sure to enjoy the Savage Fest 2008 and then save room for some good eatin' at the SUMC Strawberry Festival.

Third-graders at Bollman Bridge Elementary School are looking forward to a day of information and fun June 6 when Clicky the spokesrobot for NetSmartz visits their team.

NetSmartz is the child safety education and prevention program of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. As the spokesrobot, Clicky will be in the school to share important lessons on Internet safety with the third-grade team as part of its health curriculum.

Bollman Bridge Elementary staff feels that since the internet is such an important part of our children's lives it is important for children to know how to use it more safely.

In preparation for Clicky's visit, the students have been going to www.NetSmartzKids.org where they have been watching music videos, playing games, and completing activities centered around online and real world safety lessons.

School staff is encouraging all parents to go to the NetSmartzKids Web site with their own children as part of promoting internet safety at home. Internet safety is an important topic and should be discussed with children as soon as they begin using the internet.

I want to wish all of my readers who will be celebrating either a birthday or an anniversay this upcoming week a very happy one.
