West county gets ready for Relay for Life

It's Relay for Life season again. The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Western Howard County will be held June 20 at Western Regional Park, on Carrs Mills Road. To date, there are 24 teams registered with more than 300 participants.

The Howard County traveling band concert will also be held during the relay. The entertainment will be provided by the Hula Monsters. This is the second year for the Relay in our neighborhood.

Last year, goal was to raise $35,000 and more than $75,000 was raised in its first year. Come out and support this worthy cause. Not only will there be a great concert, but the teams will be selling food and baked goods, as well as other interesting activities.

If you'd like to participate or make a donation, there are several ways to donate. Curves of Glenelg is collecting old cell phones. There is a silent auction on its Web site. You can purchase raffle tickets for $5 with a prize of a 2008 Saturn Vue or $15,000 cash.

Josie O'Donnell of the Curves team is buying unwanted gold jewelry. The seller received 60 percent from the sale and the relay receives the remaining 40 percent. For more information, go to www.acsevents.org/relay/westernhoward.

The Future Harvest-Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture is sponsoring its fourth field day series on organic farming techniques. The next program will be held June 19 at 6 p.m. at Belleview Farm, a dairy farm in Baltimore County.

Owner Bobby Prigel will discuss his successful rotational grazing strategies, organic management and his plans for expansion into value-added enterprises. Prigel has grazed his dairy herd since 1994.

St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church will be holding a yard sale June 7, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Ladies Club will be providing food. Booth rental is $15. The church is at Route 75, one block north of Route 26, in Libertytown. You may remember that this church sustained significant damage from a fire. The proceeds of the yard sale booth rental will go to benefit the church rebuilding fund. For more information, call 301-898-5111, Ext. 13.

Congratulations go to Sandy Popp on her recent graduation from the University of Baltimore's law school. Sandy parents, Keith and Carolyn Popp, have been family friends for more than 30 years. Carolyn is a graduate of Glenelg High School.
