On May 30, the winners of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society's All County Writing Competition were announced: Luxi Wang, Centennial High School (creative writing); Emily Wilson, Centennial High School (creative writing); Bryan Arnett, Centennial High School (personal essay); Emily Durbin, Centennial High School (poetry); Benjamin Sierra, Homewood School (poetry) ; Carla Lake, Centennial High School (poetry); Carolyn Rosinsky, River Hill High School (short story); Nicole Battisti, Hammond High School (short story); and Collin Marney, Marriotts Ridge High School (short story).

The following students received the Society's Promise and Achievement Award in Language Arts, an accolade given by their respective English departments: Alexander Rubin and Cassandra Holtmann, Atholton High School; Jessica Holzberg and Emily Wilson, Centennial High School; Matthew Hoyt, Glenelg High School; Nicole Battisti and Juliette Bell, Hammond High School; Kierra Ireland and David Johnson, Homewood School; Emily Stokes and Samantha White, Howard High School; Brenda Clark and Holly Tartanian, Long Reach High School; Casey Burnett and Lindsey Cohen, Marriotts Ridge High School; Rachel Mueller and Laura Tschirgi, Mt. Hebron High School; Kristin Lawson and Jocelyn Maughan, Oakland Mills High School; Aja Hannah and Alyssha Shanks, Reservoir High School; Carolyn Rosinsky and Shela Suh, River Hill High School; and Sofija Canavan and Kristin van der Gracht, Wilde Lake High School.

The students were awarded books with hand-inscribed bookplates.

Harish Chatrathi, a ninth-grader at River Hill High School, organized a tennis tournament to aid people affected by the earthquake in China and the cyclone in Myanmar. Harish's tournament raised $320 for the International Red Cross and will become an annual event at the school.
