In this day and age of technology, let me assure you that the publication of news is moving ahead. All of the neighborhood columnists are now "blogging" -- even us old-timers who have been writing columns for a while!

On our new Web site, www.explorehoward.com, we now have our own little piece of the Web, just for Savage news. We'll post late-breaking news and other items that Savage residents need to know.

Just because the paper comes out once a week, doesn't mean the news stops! Check out the blog site here for more news and notes.

We look forward to our readers using this area as a means of providing more information that will keep community members up to date on events or activities involving our area.

With the 2007-2008 school year ending tomorrow, drivers are asked to be more cautious while driving throughout our community. Summertime tends to bring children out on our streets and roads riding bikes, skateboards and running while playing. Please exercise additional caution and make our streets safe for our children.

The Savage Historical Society is collecting information and/or photos for a special project honoring local Savage area veterans who served in our military between Sept. 16, 1940, and Dec. 31, 1946. They need your help in collecting this information and ask that if you have information and/or photos, that you submit them by Sept. 15.

All of our veterans are honored, however, this special project is to being done for our Veterans of World War II. Call Helen Rushing, SHS Secretary, at 301-725-1241 should you have any questions regarding this request.

The SHS has advised that some of our community members have been scammed. Apparently, there are individuals going throughout our community asking for donations in support of the society.

Rushing has advised that this is not the practice of the SHS and that should someone approach you and ask for such a donation, please do not respond to this request. If you can obtain information from this person, or can provide a description, call the police.

In addition to the above scam, another scam that has recently occurred in our community involves persons approaching residents asking if they can either pave their driveway or provide landscaping service.

The persons involved in the scam approach homeowners advising them that they have "extra" paving material or "extra" landscaping materials. Once the work has been performed, the persons involved in the scam inform the homeowner that the work will cost more than what they were originally told. Please do not do business with anyone you have not contacted or whom you do not have a contract.

Betty Caldwell, director of Stressless Tests, is encouraging high school students to take time this summer to learn how to make test taking less stressful. There is a five-day course, offered in August, that will enable students to better prepare for testing taking. For more information, go to www.Stresslesstests.org or call her at 410-740-4659.

If you have some free time this summer and want to make a difference in the lives of our elderly community members, why not volunteer to act as a Neighbor Ride volunteer.

Rosemary Noble, volunteer coordinator, is looking for persons who can volunteer several hours a week of their time providing reasonably priced, reliable transportation for elderly community members to attend health care appointments, social activities, etc.

Neighbor Ride offers this service to seniors age 60 and older, so that they can remain active, independent and connected to the community.

If you can offer such a service, call Noble at 410-884-RIDE or e-mail her at volunteer@heighborride.org. Noble said that young children shouldn't be a reason for not volunteering as most seniors truly enjoy being around young children.

I want to wish all of my readers who will be celebrating a birthday or an anniversary during the upcoming week a very happy one!

I want to wish my son, Chris, and his wife, Tara, a very happy first anniversary! Tara, what a difference you have made in Chris!

I want to thank you for your help with him -- he's a work in progress. You guys know I'm kidding! I love you both so much!
