It's strawberry-picking season in Howard County, and one of the best places to get those, big, bright pieces of fruit is at our neighborhood farm, Larriland Farm. Last year, our 4-H club visited Larriland Farms to pick strawberries to use to make jam as a club project.
Guy Moore, one of the owners, presented a short, educational program on growing and picking the best strawberries. Needless to say, the berries were great and the jam was award-winning. The strawberry crop lasts for around four weeks. Larriland has been owned by the Moore family since 1973 as a pick-your-own farm operation.
Not only do they grow strawberries, but you can also find various kinds of cherries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, peaches, nectarines, applies, spinach, beets, tomatoes, broccoli, and pumpkins.
If you're not into picking your own fruit and vegetables, Larriland Farm also has a Farmer's Market on Route 94, about three miles south of Interstate 70. For more information, call 410-442-2605.
