It seems like we have suffered through a cool, wet spring, however warmer days are ahead and with it comes strawberry season.
There are plenty of opportunites to enjoy some of this locally grown fruit. Several evenings and Saturday mornings, I have driven by the Frederick-Bittner house on Ten Oaks Road to see one of the boys outside selling strawberries from his neighbor's patch. I have to admit that I did buy some, with visions of making my grandmother's pound cake with fresh berries on top. The kids, however, ate the sweet berries faster then I could cut them up!
You can always check out the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings at the Glenwood Branch Library for some fresh berries, or set out to pick your own straight from the field. Larriland Farm, just three miles south of Interstate 70 on Route 94 in Woodbine is a great place to take the family.
The picking will continue until about mid-June. It's always a good idea to call ahead if you plan on picking at Larriland. Feel free to call them at 410-442-2605 or 301-854-6110 for additional information. You can also go to their Web site, www.pickyourown.com.
With the flurry of end-of-the-school year activities, by the time you read this, the kids will have only one day of school remaining before summer vacation. Glenwood Community Center has been working hard to put together an offering of fun programs for young and old, families or individuals to keep everyone entertained this summer. Each time I visit this complex, I am greatly impressed with this great community gathering place.
On June 20, the Glenwood Community Center is planning a Family Movie Night, 8-10 p.m. Youngsters can feel free to come dressed in pajamas, and can bring their favorite sleeping bag and/or pillow, to watch a viewing of "Shrek the Third." The movie will be shown in the center's movie lounge. The movie is free and light refreshments will be provided for an additional fee.
For the older set, there will be a Teen Scene Movie Under the Stars June 27, 9-11 pm. Teens can enjoy a Friday evening hanging out with friends and watching "Transformers" for free. Again, light refreshments will be available for an additional fee.
Do you have a youngster in your house who is a budding sports fan? Plan to stop by the community center June 28, 7-9 p.m., for a Family Sports Party. Break out your favorite sports jersey and a ball cap. Children can choose from a variety of crafts to make and take home. Just like at any sporting event, concessions will be provided, such as hot pretzels, popcorn and nachos. Registration is requested and the cost is $3 per person.
Do you have a teenager who is trying to figure out how to stay in shape over the summer so they will be ready to play sports again in the fall? The Glenwood Community Center has all the fitness you need for teenagers and adults.
The center has expanded its age requirement for participants to utilize its fitness room without adult supervision to 16 years and older. Teens 13 to 15 years old may use the fitness room with adult supervision after they have completed a four-week teen weight training course taught by one of our certified trainers. The community center's fitness room offers numerous opportunities for you to raise or keep your current fitness level.
Take advantage of the variety of cardiovascular and targeted-area weight equipment. The center offers a variety of fitness center passes to meet your needs. There are passes for 25, 50 or 100 visits. The pass has no expiration date and you pay no additional monthly fees.
A medical clearance form and orientation is required to be completed prior to exercising.
This summer, the community center will also be offering an Ironman Fitness Challenge. This is the extra boost to motivate you to go for a workout, in between the busy summer schedule of vacation, kids, camps, work and other obligations.
The Glenwood Community Center Ironman Challenge is designed to encourage participants to complete an Iron Man triathlon. However, the difference between the real Ironman and its Challenge is that participants get a month to complete it.
Weekly prizes and several final awards will be given out, including fitness passes and personal training sessions. The Ironman Challenge will take place July 7-Aug. 8 and the participation fee is $20. Registration is required for this program.
The Glenwood Community Center is at 2400 Route 97. For more information on any of the activities listed above, call the front desk at 410-313-4840.
Glenelg United Methodist Church, 13900 Burntwoods Road, in Glenelg, will be hosting the youth choir from University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill, N.C. The choir will be presenting a performance of the popular musical "Godspell," based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew. The performance will take place on June 21 at 7 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public. Mark your calendar to enjoy this evening of beautiful music and drama.
