A few weeks ago I shared news of the Western Howard County Relay for Life which will take place this weekend, Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21. Several groups and individuals in our area will be participating in this walk. Curves of Glenelg is the top fundraiser in the team category (they were also the top fundraiser in 2007).

Walking as part of that team is Dayton resident Nadine Hines. She also participated in another Relay for Life event earlier in the month with her church, Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

Hines said while she walks, she carries the names of people in her shoes -- cancer survivors in her right shoe and those who have lost their cancer battle in her left shoe -- each step she takes reminds her to remember the many lives that have been touched by cancer.

Also listed in the top five for team fundraising is the staff from Dayton Oaks Elementary School. Leading the team are principal Kimberlyn Pratesi and assistant principal Carol DeBord.

Other team members include Nancy Levering, JoAnne Mezei, Diane Thompson, Michelle Meney, Linda Shaw, Jocelyn Forrest, Deborah Castleman, Roderick Redman, Brian Bailey, Shanna Duvall and Mike Lawler.

As part of the Relay for Life event, there is also the opportunity for the community to come out and show their support, even if you are not a team member or individual participating in the event.

The Hula Monsters will present a concert of rockabilly/honky tonk/Hawaiian/swing music from 7 to 8:30 p.m. While you are there, make a trip around the track and see the many luminara honoring and remembering those and their battle with cancer.

To learn more about this year's event or to make a donation, go to www.events.cancer.org/rflwesternhoward.

Each year, the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth recognizes top students from Maryland for academic excellence. These are students in grades 2-8 who make the most of their advanced abilities in academics.

At a recent awards ceremony, four Folly Quarter Middle School students were recognized for their academic excellence. Congratulations go to Maribeth Blonchek, Suman Chaki, Mark LaPointe and Elric Zhang. Elric also received the award for SAT/ACT High Honors for grades 7-8. Job well done!

Still looking for some activities for your youngster to do this summer? Kangaroo Kids will hold jump rope workshops July 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 10001 Route 108, in Columbia.

Jumping rope is a great way to get exercise. Jumpers must be at least 6 years old in order to participate. Jumpers should wear comfortable shorts and a shirt (no jeans) and aerobic type shoes (no sandals). Jump ropes will be available for purchase.

To register, e-mail kangarookids1@gmail.com with your child's name, age, telephone number and day you would like to attend. (You will only be notified if space is not available.) You will complete registration the day of the workshop. Cost is $40, payable by cash or check.

Another option for your child who is interested in sports is the Glenelg High School Boosters Sports Camps. Your child will receive sports instruction from the school's award winning coaching staff. Camps that will be offered this summer will include track, softball, baseball, girls and boys basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, girls and boys lacrosse and field hockey.

The fee is $150 per camper per session. For more information, go to the Web site www.glenelgboosters.org.

Congratulations are in order for the following Dayton Oaks Elementary School students whose artwork has been selected to hang at Sandy Spring Bank, in Clarksville.

Stop by the bank during regular business hours and meet the manager and view the children's work.

The display will be up for most of the summer, so stop by to see the works of Claire Waddington, Zach Shields, Emily Grimm, Rachel Morin, Jackson Stepherson, Amy Steinhorn, Emily Jones, Ryan Wolfrey, Victoria Timanus, Jenna Warner, Jack Rich, Kendall Stull, Bronwyn Gallagher, Greta Kluckhuhn, Bridgette Rodell, Megan Lydon, Meena Sengottuvelu, Allison Krein, Jessie Lala, Brandon Murphy, Olivia Mott, Brianna Davis and Haley Armacost.
