Residents of Oakland Mills took a trip through the decades to celebrate the 40th birthday of their village -- the second-oldest in Columbia -- on June 27 to June 29.

Festivities began Friday evening in The Other Barn with a showing of the movie, "The Graduate," from 1968, the same year the village was founded. The Oakland Mills Fest followed the next day in the courtyard and featured a "Woodstock" theme with children's activities, live music, free hot dogs and drinks, and birthday cake. That evening, residents of all ages boogied at a '70s-themed family disco dance, according to village manager Sandy Cederbaum.

Sunday brought the celebration back to present day starting with the village's regularly scheduled farmers market in the morning. That evening kicked off the "Jazz in the Mills" series, with performances by Lavenia Nesmith, among others.

About 700 residents of Oakland Mills participated during the weekend, Cederbaum said.

"We just wanted people to enjoy being in their community with their neighbors (and to have) a nice afternoon," she added.
