The PTA Council of Howard County recently awarded nine county students with scholarships totaling $10,500.

The scholarships recognized students for a variety of accomplishments and career goals.

Scholarships for academic excellence, worth $2,000 each, were awarded to Tara Iyengar of River Hill High School, Courtney N. Knill of Glenelg High School, and Caroline Willsey of Marriotts Ridge High School.

A Teacher Education Scholarship of $2,000, intended for students who plan to pursue a teaching career, was awarded to Katherine M. Coffey of Mt. Hebron High School.

Four students were honored for their community service efforts with Charles Ecker Community Service Scholarships. The $500 awards went to Sarah E. Baker of Howard High School, Brianna E. Bradford of Reservoir High School, Samantha L. Ferraro of Marriotts Ridge High School, and Scott A. Simpson of Hammond High School.

The $500 M.T. Goedeke Trade/Technical/Two-Year College Scholarship was given to Andrea N. Dykes of Long Reach High School.

* Three students from St. John's Parish Day School recently were honored by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Second-graders Ava Pirie and Kacie Greenfield and fifth-grader Jessica Miles were recognized based on "exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test," according to a press release.

* Mayfield Woods Middle School will hold its annual Mayfest, an arts festival, Saturday, May 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. The school is located at 7950 Red Barn Way, in Elkridge. Call 410-313-5022 for more information.

* River Hill High School and the school's PTSA will be hosting the fourth annual Student Life Expo on Wednesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. The event is intended to give new, incoming and existing families a preview of extracurricular activities planned for the 2009-2010 school year. * The Marriotts Ridge High School dance program is sponsoring master classes in hip-hop, featuring Honey Rockwell, on June 5. A workshop for middle school students will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the school's dance studio, and the workshop for high school students will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $25. * Reservoir High School's football teams will hold its third annual "Huge Yard Sale" June 27 (rain date June 28). Spaces may be purchased for $15 for the first space and $5 for each additional space.
