The award is dedicated to the late Dr. Barry Aronson, a fellow member of the professional staff who was an enthusiastic supporter and coach of school athletics. Each year, one graduating male and one graduating female are chosen to receive the award.
Kishan Patel, a high school senior attending Marriotts Ridge High School, in Woodstock, is the Maryland winner of the 2009 AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report.
AXA Advisors, a provider of financial services for consumers and businesses, announced that under the AXA Achievement Scholarship program, Patel is one of 52 students - one from each state, plus Washington and Puerto Rico - that have been awarded scholarships of $10,000.
All scholarship recipients -- known as AXA Achievers -- were highlighted on the U.S. News & World Report Web site, www.usnews.com last month, and featured in the magazine's May 2009 Career/Education Guide issue. Patel spent the summer in India performing and teaching underprivileged children in boarding schools. After each performance, he led seminars relating to music and arranged concerts and seminars during the time period that included unprecedented flooding and terrorist attacks in the country. Patel is a Marriotts Ridge Scholar, intern at Johns Hopkins University and Kennedy Krieger Institute and teaches music in Baltimore.
