The school year that draws to an end Friday, June 19 brought us many stories about Howard County students becoming more environmentally conscious, like the story about Manor Woods Elementary School students stomping on hundreds of pounds of aluminum cans to encourage recycling, and the 10 county schools recognized with Maryland Green Schools certification by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education.
On that note, the following graduating seniors received the James and Anne Robinson Foundation's Award for Environmental Leadership: Rachel Collins, of Atholton High School; Teresa Yeh, of Centennial High School; Megan Clark, of Glenelg High School; Steven Kyle Stanton, of Hammond High School; Megan Broderick and Becca Ballinger, both of Howard High School; Roxy Araghi, of Marriotts Ridge High School; Emily Mellicant, of Mt. Hebron High School; Michelle Kearney, of Oakland Mills High School; Leila Wardcartori, of Reservoir High School; Allison Kotewicz, of River Hill High School; and Grace Liu, of Wilde Lake High School.
The award is given to students based on recommendations from their schools, and each recipient was chosen based on their creativity, commitment and leadership with regards to the environment, according to a press release from the foundation.
The students received a certificate, $100 and a signed copy of the book "The Chesapeake Watershed: A Sense of Place and a Call to Action" by Ned Tillman, a local author and environmental activist.
Ethan Simon, a ninth-grader at Atholton High School, is another award winner. He received the 2009 Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship Award. The award provides for a grant to allow Ethan to study under Lafayette Gilchrest, an award-winning jazz musician. Ethan, a member of the school's Jazz Ensemble and other performing ensembles, will be learning jazz interpretation and improvisation from Gilchrest.
