The Maryland State Department of Education honored 143 students with the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship in 2009 including four that had attended Laurel-area schools.

Fri-Atsoh Achirimofor of Laurel High, Danika Allen of St. Vincent Pallotti High, Kayla Fowler of Laurel High and Serena Walker of Meade High each were named as 2009 Byrd Honors Scholars.

Each honoree receives a four-year scholarship worth up to $1,500 a year to be used for undergraduate study at any college or university based on tuition.

The scholars were chosen from more than 600 nominees from public and private high school principals and home schooling entities. Nominees must be in the top 1 percent of their graduating class.

“Maryland has the great fortune of having scores of talented young people at our high schools, and this program gives us a chance to celebrate their incredible accomplishments,” said state Superintendent Nancy Grasmick.  “This program provides important financial help as our students prepare to further their education.”
