The Maryland State Department of Education honored 143 students with the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship in 2009, including four that had attended Laurel-area schools.
Fri-Atsoh Achirimofor of Laurel High, Danika Allen of St. Vincent Pallotti High, Kayla Fowler of Laurel High and Serena Walker of Meade High each were named as 2009 Byrd Honors Scholars.
Each honoree receives a four-year scholarship worth up to $1,500 a year to be used for undergraduate study at any college or university based on tuition.
The scholars were chosen from more than 600 nominees who were in the top 1 percent of their graduating class.
