In its first year, the Maryland Novice State Championship Debate Tournament included 60 competitors. The tournament was sponsored by Capital Debate, a local nonprofit organization that supports academic debate programs.

Mt. Hebron High School student Agree Ahmed took first place in individual competition, while Nidhi Muppalla, of Burleigh Manor Middle School, finished in third place, and Cody Knipfer, of Mt. Hebron High School, finished fourth.

In the team competition, Muppalla and Harsha Neerchal, of Centennial High School, finished second.
