Now that most private and independent schools in Laurel, as well as public schools in Howard County, started classes this week all students are back to class for the 2009-2010 school year.
Prince George's County policy requires that all individuals who wish to volunteer in
the schools or chaperone field trips must go through a background check
and be fingerprinted. Bond Mill Elementary School on Sherwood Road in West Laurel will host Fingerprinting Night on Thursday, Sept. 24 beginning at 6 p.m. in the school’s multipurpose room.
Anyone who had a fingerprint check done last year will not need to renew their check. For more information, call the school at 301-497-3600.
After-school programsWith school back in session, the city of Laurel has started up its after-school programs at city community centers. The Laurel Armory will be open for free on weekdays, from 3:30- 4:45 p.m. for ages 8 to 12, and from 4:45-6 p.m. for ages 13-17. The Robert DiPietro Community Center will be open to all students after school. City residents pay $10 while non-residents pay $30. The program includes free basketball, billiards, air-hockey and game systems.
Additionally, teens may stop by from 7-10 p.m. Friday nights at the Laurel Community Center, or Saturday nights at the Armory.
Call the city Department of Parks and Recreation at 301-725-7800.
