The PTA at Fulton Elementary School has partnered with carbonfund.org, a Silver Spring-based nonprofit, as part of the parent organization's environmental efforts.
Carbonfund.org named the Fulton PTA its first "CarbonFree Green PTA," according to a statement from PTA president Brian Meshkin.
Through the partnership, carbonfund.org calculated the estimated carbon emissions from PTA activities for the 2009-2010 school years, including use of the school building for meetings and events and travel to and from meetings and activities. The PTA is aiming to offset its "carbon footprint" by donating to projects and research in renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation.
The PTA also has planned a fundraiser where members and friends can check carbon emissions from their homes and cars and make donations to renewable energy projects through carbonfund.org, with a portion of the donations supporting the PTA's environmental initiatives.

River Hill takes on 'The Matchmaker' in November
The River Hill High School Theatre Arts Department is busy rehearsing its November production of Thornton Wilder's romantic comedy, "The Matchmaker."
Theatre arts teacher Pam Land will direct with the help of student directors Mary Sarro and Shaswati Das. A long-time friend of RHHS drama, Joe Blasko, will direct the construction of the set designed by RHHS alumnus, Mike Leon. A crew of more than 25 dedicated students (lead by student stage manager Martin Proulx) will build the sets and props and run the show for each performance. Rhonda De La Mar, RHHS math teacher, will coordinate the many period costumes with the assistance of a team of parent volunteers.
"The Matchmaker," set in the late 1880's, is a tale complete with mistaken identities, secret rendezvous and separated lovers. It was the basis for the musical "Hello, Dolly!" When matchmaker Dolly Levi meets Horace Vandergelder, she sets her sights on a match for herself. Of course, complications ensue -- but so does adventure, love and a touch of insanity.
The performance dates are Nov. 4-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $9 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets are available by mail order beginning Oct.12 at www.hocomojo.com, then click on "The Matchmaker," at River Hill for a downloadable ticket order form; at the RHHS Media Center school days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Oct. 14; in front of the school dining hall from 10:15 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. on school days beginning Nov. 2; and at the box office 90 minutes before curtain on performance nights.
