Julia Krout, daughter of Tim and Michelle Krout, is one of the students participating in Washington College's 2009 Chesapeake Semester.

A sophomore, she is majoring in biology with an environmental studies minor. She graduated from Chapelgate Christian Academy, in Marriottsville. Inside and outside the classroom, students are studying the history, ecology, and culture of the Chesapeake as a microcosm of the challenges and transitions confronting coastal communities around the world.

Once outside the classroom, students are given the chance to immerse themselves into the life of the bay through trips to various bay-influenced environments and communities in Maryland and Virginia. Later in the semester, the lessons will be brought into a larger context after a trip to Peru in order to study the coastal environments of the South Pacific.
