The academy will feature a free supper from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Afterwards, the activities are as follows:
For parents, a workshop in English and Spanish, "Ten Ways to Help Improve My Child's Reading" ("Diez Maneras para Ayudar a Mejorar la Lectura de Mi Hijo").
For school-age children, a nature program, "Rulers of the Sky: Birds of Prey in Our Own Backyard," with live birds such as eagles and hawks; and also a "Get Moving - Fit is Fun" exercise activity.
For preschoolers ages 2 to 5, supervised child care.
The seven schools are Bond Mill, Deerfield Run, James Harrison, Laurel, Montpelier, Oaklands and Scotchtown Hills elementaries. To reserve a place, e-mail sidebyside@sidebysidelaurel.org or call 202-710-5555.
I feel like my child's reading level would be severely affected by the language that he/she is reading. For instance, my child reads at the 5th grade level in French. But only the Third Grade level in Norwegian.

Howard County teaches 'genre' reading which includes horrific grammatical errors, and is required from elementary school upward. Most reputable private schools wouldn't consider requiring small children to read badly written books.
