Students enjoyed performances centered on India and the Philippines and listened to guest speakers from Japan, Chile, Bangladesh, Senegal, Botswana and other countries.
Each class completed a project to celebrate the day, including a display of nine cities in Italy and the construction of a large red dragon and an explanation of how the symbol of the dragon is used in celebrations in China.
The students also received a visit from a Howard County library representative who told them stories from other lands.
"They really get into learning about how other people live," Nancy Gifford, the school's Title One teacher and emcee for the event, said of the students.
The Laurel Woods community represents 39 countries and 22 languages, Gifford added.
"I think it was nice for kids to see that aspect of a different culture," said parent Robin Behler of a dance performance by the Nrithya Shala Dance Academy, which specializes in classical Indian dance.
Behler's daughter, Meghan, a third-grader, was part of a performance centered on the history of the Philippines.
"This was probably the most successful one we've ever had," Gifford said of the event.
