Folly Quarter Middle School eighth-grade student Emily Schweich received the Ben Carson Scholars Fund, a $1,000 scholarship awarded for high academic achievers and humanitarians.

She also received the Vicki Rosen Memorial Award, bestowed to a Carson Scholar, which comes with a $500 scholarship.

The Rosen award is given to the nominee who displays the compassion, kindness, love of life and sense of humor that Rosen, who was codirector of the Carson Scholarship Fund and a friend and colleague of Carson's, displayed in her life.

Schweich is the first Folly Quarter Middle School student to win a Ben Carson Scholars Award. Nominees must have at least a 3.7 grade-point average and demonstrate humanitarian qualities.

Nominees also submit essays describing their unique endeavors, community service projects, personal challenges and solutions to the world's social problems.
