Jump Rope Classes
Kangaroo Kids will hold jump rope workshops Wed., July 2 and Thu., July 3, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Columbia Presbyterian Church, 10001 Route 108. Jumpers must be at least 6 years old in order to participate. Jumpers should wear comfortable shorts and a shirt (no jeans) and aerobic type shoes (no sandals). Jump ropes will be available for purchase. To register, e-mail kangarookids1@gmail.com with your child's name, age, telephone number and preferred day of attendance. Cost is $40, payable by cash or check the day of the workshop.
School calendar for next year
The approved 2008-2009 school year calendar can be found at the Howard County Public School System Web site, www.hcpss.org. The first day of school will be Aug. 25.
At the library
The Howard County Library's 2008 Summer Reading Club is off and running for preschool through high school students. Earn prizes for reading. Register at any branch library or online at www.hclibrary.org.
Child care
Howard County Recreation & Parks offers Licensed Early Learning Centers for children ages 2-4 years of age. Programs are offered at the following locations: Bushy Park Elementary, Elkridge Elementary, Fulton Elementary, Gorman Crossing Elementary, Kiwanis Wallas, Triadelphia Ridge Elementary, Roger Carter Center and Veterans Elementary. Summer Camps
Capitol Debate, a business partner with the Howard County Public School System, will host summer camps in debate, public speaking and mock trial July 21 to Aug. 1, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (extended hours available) at the Loyola College, Columbia Campus, 8890 McGaw Road. The middle school debate camp is for students entering sixth through ninth grades. The public speaking camp is for students entering fourth and fifth grades. The mock trial camp is for students entering fourth through ninth grades. Cost is $225 for one week or $425 for two weeks. Apply online at capitol-debate.com. Baseball at community center
Wear your favorite sports jersey and ball cap to watch and root for the home team -- Orioles -- at the Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville Saturday, June 28, 7-9 p.m. There will be a variety of crafts to make and take home. Concessions will be provided, such as hot pretzels, popcorn and nachos. All ages; cost is $3 person. For more information, call 410-313-4840.

Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School bids a fond farewell to Principal Sue Webster. Webster is going to Waterloo Elementary School, where she will be principal. Chanel Morris will be the next principal of Triadelphia Ridge.

Artwork of the following Dayton Oaks Elementary School students has been selected to hang at Sandy Spring Bank in Clarksville: Claire Waddington, Zach Shields, Emily Grimm, Rachel Morin, Jackson Stepherson, Amy Steinhorn, Emily Jones, Victoria Timanus, Ryan Wolfrey, Jenna Warner, Jack Rich, Kendall Stull, Bronwyn Gallagher, Greta Kluckhuhn, Bridgette Rodell, Megan Lydon, Meena Sengottuvelu, Allison Krein, Jessie Lala, Brandon Murphy, Olivia Mott, Brianna Davis and Haley Armacost. The display will be up for most of the summer.
Clarksville Elementary
Coloring sensations
Swetha Rao, Seine Yoo and Lily Trossman, first-graders at Clarksville Elementary School, received recognition for their entries in the county level of the Howard Soil Conservation District's Coloring Contest. Lily placed second in the county-wide competition from a pool of over 200 entries.

Thomas Long, a graduate from Johns Hopkins, 2008, has received the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Undergraduate Research Award for demonstrated contributions to research in chemical and biomolecular engineering.
Brian Kusterer graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history from Seton Hill University.
Ryan Deacon received a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science and engineering from Lehigh University June 19.
Jose Pitti received a bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Lehigh University June 19.
