Dickson's new music

Singer-songwriter Bill Dickson will celebrate the release of his new CD, "Gameology," Sat., May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre of the Howard County Center for the Arts. Dickson, who has released three CDs and received favorable reviews in Music Monthly, will perform with his band, MTT. Opening the concert will be former MTT band member Jeff Coulson. Orchestral exhibition

The Columbia Orchestra closes its 30th season with the concert "Pictures at an Exhibition" Sat., May 31 at 7:30 p.m. in The Jim Rouse Theatre at Wilde Lake High School. Besides the Mussorgsky title track, the program will include a work titled "Rapture," composed by the nephew of Columbia founder James Rouse, composer Christopher Rouse.

Also showcased will be winners of the orchestra's Young Artist Competition. They include violinist Alan Zhang, a seventh-grader at Patapsco Middle School, and violinist Brian Kim, a freshman at Marriott's Ridge High School. Zhang will perform the first movement of Edouard Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole," while Kim will play Camille Saint-Saens' "Introduction and Rondo Cappriccio."

Junior Division competition alternate winners include violinist Evangeline Chandran and clarinetist James Zhan, both from Clarksville Middle School.

Senior Division alternate winners include cellist Ann Yeh, of Centennial High School; violinist Nicole Liaw, of River Hill High School; and flutists Kate Bateman and Tina Huang, of Hammond High School.

Admission is $18 general, $15 for seniors older than 60, and $10 for students. Call 410-465-8777.

Live and unplugged

Hard Travelers and Limelighters member Mack Bailey performs his own solo concert this Thu., May 29, 8 p.m., at Baldwin's Station & Pub in Sykesville.

Getting jazzed

Columbia jazz singer Gail Marten performs with the Jim Lyman Jazz Trio Sat., May 31, 7 p.m., at That's Amore, located in downtown Columbia. Marten will sing both mainstream and Latin jazz. Call 410-772-5900.

House of Jazz gets set to re-open

The 2008 Claude Ligon House of Jazz is gearing up for its annual live jazz blowout at Columbia's historic Oakland. Over a half-dozen professional jazz acts and solo musicians will be featured in various rooms of the downtown mansion, offering music-lovers endless concert choices, refreshments and an "open house" atmosphere. The concert is June 14, but tickets are on sale now by phone at 410-730-7106 or at the African Art Museum of Maryland inside Oakland.

McKnight shines

Folk singer and songwriter Andrew McKnight can be heard Wed., June 4, noon-2 p.m., as part of the Lakefront Wednesdays Concert Series, held outdoors by Lake Kittamaqundi in the Columbia Town Center. McKnight hails from Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, and has released several CDs. Call 410-715-3104.
