The roots-rock band Ruthie and the Wranglers opens the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks' Traveling Bands series Fri., June 6 at 7 p.m. at Savage Park (8400 Fair St.). Adkins at the helm
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Associate Concertmaster Madeline Adkins will lead a baroque program Sat., June 7 at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Adkins is a Columbia native who was the student leader of the baroque orchestra at University of North Texas, in Denton. On the bill will be works by Vivaldi and Handel. Tickets run $15 to $57. 'House of Jazz' re-opens
The 2008 Claude Ligon House of Jazz is getting set up for its annual live blowout at Columbia's historic Oakland. Professional jazz musicians and vocalists like Carlos Johnson, Gail Baer and Steve Guyger will be spotlighted in various chambers of the mansion, offering music lovers endless concert choices, a buffet, drinks and an "open house" atmosphere. Reilly returns

A new entry for 'Diary'
The longtime resident community theater troupe known as the Columbia Community Players has a fresh production of the classic drama "The Diary of Anne Frank" up on the boards at the Slayton House theater. 'Radio' reprise
Howard County's Fabulous 50+ Players will restage the nostalgia revue "Radio Daze" Fri., June 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Howard County Center for the Arts (8510 High Ridge Road, Ellicott City). The one-night only performance will be a fundraiser for the troupe.
Harriet Lynn directs the production, based on Gene Leitner's "Red Hot Days of Radio." The show is a "radio comedy" that features music and 1930s and '40s radio scripts originally done by famous teams like Burns and Allen and Abbott and Costello. Get 'Footloose'
The Drama Learning Center in Columbia is initiating a Summer Stage community theater for teens and adults. It will hold auditions for its first production, the movie musical "Footloose," June 9 and 10, by appointments. Callbacks will be held June 11. DLC owner and artistic director Stephanie Lynn Williams is seeking actors for many of the major roles. Actors should prepare 16-32 bars of an up-tempo song and be prepared to dance.
