"A Bad Year for Tomatoes," a zany comedy, opens June 27 at 8 p.m. at the Laurel Mill Playhouse, 508 Main St., and three North Laurel residents appear in the show. Maureen Rogers, the play's producer, performs as Cora Gump, a nosy neighbor. I appear as the sheriff who solves the mystery and Joe Mariano performs as Tom Lamont, the agent for actress, Myra Marlowe, played by Cheryl Walker, the star of the show, who I try in vain to arrest.
Other performers are Denny Meyers as Piney, a not very bright handy man who falls in love with a recording; Sabrina DeLee as Willa Mae Wilcox, a strange herbalist; and Marie Sproul as Reba Harper, another bothersome neighbor.
Performances are every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. until July 20 with an additional performance July 10 at 8 p.m. and matinees on July 6 and 20 at 2 p.m. Call 301-617-9906.

The FMNP was established by Congress in 1992 to provide fresh, unprepared, locally grown fruits and vegetables and to expand the awareness, use of and sales at farmers' markets. The program offers benefits to farmers and qualified seniors by increasing consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. In 2006, 2.5 million participants received farmers' market benefits. During fiscal year 2006, 14,259 farmers, 2,896 farmers' markets and 2,136 roadside stands were authorized to accept FMNP coupons. Coupons redeemed through the FMNP resulted in over $22.4 million in revenue to farmers for fiscal year 2006.

Quinton Askew, program manager of the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center, was sweltering in his office when I talked with him last week. Thieves stole the copper from the air conditioning unit on the roof of the Center, 9105 all Saints Road. Other tenants at the Whisky Bottom Shopping Center also lost units.
Last month, the Lions Club performed eye screening for 33 persons at the center. Beginning this month on Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon veterans and disabled individuals can apply for jobs or receive benefit information at the Center.
Hearing and vision screening will be available in August. On Wednesdays, 2-6 p.m, The Department of Social Services will offer food stamp assistance. Hopefully the air condition unit will be replaced soon.
The Southeastern Health Center, 9525 Durness Lane, offers free vaccine to children and adolescents to meet their school immunization requirements. A parent or guardian must accompany their child to the clinic and bring the child's immunization record.
Walk-in Clinics will be held July 17 and Aug. 14 and 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. Parents are asked to arrive before 5:30 p.m.
The Gorman Crossing Elementary School Gators raised $1,325 during Spirit Days this year.
