Joy Harjo word/music

Hawaii-based Native American poet Joy Harjo is one of the few writers to show up at readings with a saxophone case. That's because music is an essential element of her approach to art. When she isn't touring the country in support of her books, she plays saxophone with the band Poetic Justice.

You can see Harjo live this Sunday, Oct. 5 when she performs for the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society at the Howard County Conservancy, 10520 Old Frederick Road, three miles west of Route 29 on Route 99, in Woodstock. Individual tickets are $10, and $5 for each additional family member. Call 410-772-4568 for information, or go to www.HoCoPoLitSo.org.

The Oklahoma native is a past winner of the American Book Award and other honors for her volumes of poetry, which include "How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems" (2002), "A Map to the Next World: Poems" (2000), and "The Woman Who Fell From the Sky (1994)." For a taste of what she does, there's a fun clip of a 1997 reading on YouTube here.
