Howard Community College held a ribbon cutting for its new Radiologic Technology Laboratory during a ceremony in the Nursing Building on July 18. County Executive Kenneth Ulman and Congressman Elijah Cummings joined college officials for the event.

The Howard County Poetry and Literature Society has elected new board members: Susan Thornton Hobby, an editor and journalist, returns after a brief absence; and Padraic Kennedy, former Columbia Association president joins the board for the first time and will lead the organization's efforts to increase HoCoPoLitSo's Endowment Fund, currently at $165,000 to $200,000. In addition, Virginia Pausch, Patty Rouse and David Barrett were re-elected to another three-year term. Officers Barrett, chair; Catherine McLoughlin-Hayes, vice chair; Kathleen Larson, treasurer; and Timothy Singleton, recording secretary were also re-elected.

Angela Prudhomme, of Columbia, has been promoted to the position of unit manager for Lia Sophia, a direct sales company.

The Community Health Charities of Maryland -- a federation that raises funds through workplace giving for 43 statewide and regional health agencies -- has elected the following individuals to two-year terms on the board of directors: Ron Carlson, of Ellicott City, vice chairman; Ann Rasenberger, of Ellicott City; and Andy Barth, of Fulton. In addition, Carlson was recognized for two year's of service to the board.

Howard County government has announced that Money magazine has ranked Ellicott City and Columbia No. 8 on its America's Best Places to Live 2008 list.

David Salkeld, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Columbia, has been appointed as an attorney with Arent Fox LLP, an international trade group, in Washington. He will focus on customs compliance and other international trade matters.

Deborah Stallings, president and chief executive officer of HR Anew Inc., in Columbia, has been honored by the Human Resource Leadership Awards of Greater Washington, a nonprofit organization supported by Marymount University that recognizes individuals in the human resource profession that demonstrate exemplary leadership and strategic vision. Stallings received the Sister Eymard Gallagher Award for Corporate Social Responsibility. In addition, she was installed in June as the national secretary of the National Association of Women Business Owners, at the organization's national conference held in Phoenix, Ariz.

Vicki R. Cavey-- an office administrator for the law firm of Fishbein & Fishbein P.A., located in historic Ellicott City-- has been selected by The Daily Record as the Outstanding Law Firm Administrator for 2008.
