Brody Tennant and Mike McCarthy both made game-breaking plays late in the second half, but Centennial claimed the Ed Holshue Cup by beating homestanding Mt. Hebron, 21-14, Friday night behind a key interception in the end zone and the hard-charging running of Kyle Young.
Young scored two touchdowns as Centennial snapped a three-game losing streak. The Eagles (2-3) hadn't won since opening night, a three-point win over Howard. Mt. Hebron, which had snapped a 19-game losing streak two weeks ago in a win over Atholton, dropped its second straight to fall to 1-4.
Tennant cut Centennial's lead to 21-14 late in the third quarter when he scored on a 75-yard run. He broke a couple of tackles, weaved his way through defenders found open field and scored Mt. Hebron's second touchdown of the quarter after trailing, 14-0, at halftime.
"We're getting a little more downfield effort from some kids blockking. At that second level, that springs long runs," Mt. Hebron coach Ross Hannon said.
With 6 1/2 minutes left, Mt. Hebron got a key stop on a fourth-down pass play to take possession. Six plays into its ensuing drive, Clint Huber threw a pass to big-play receiver Mike McCarthy who boxed out his defender with his 6-foot-2 frame to catch the ball. The play went for 38 yards, putting the ball on the Centennial 8-yard line. On the next play, though, Huber forced a throw into a crowd and Jarrett Jones came up with a big interception for the Eagles.
From there, Centennial was able to run down the clock by running the ball up the middle. With no time outs to stop the clock, Young picked up a first down with 40 seconds left to seal the game for Centennial.
"I like that my team can use me, can rely on me," Young said. "That means a lot."
In other action across the county Friday night, River Hill continued to roll, beating Long Reach, 50-7; Wilde Lake escaped with a 22-21 win over Atholton to remain unbeaten; Reservoir broke a two-game losing streak with a 27-10 win over Oakland Mills; and Howard won its fourth in a row, defeating Hammond, 47-6; Marriotts Ridge went on the road and pulled out a 28-20 win over Glenelg in overtime.
FRIDAY NIGHT ROUNDUP
RIVER HILL 50, LONG REACH 7
At Long Reach, River Hill moved to 5-0 with a convincing, 43-point win over the Lightning, scoring a combined four touchdowns on defense and special teams.
Michael Campanaro and Kevin Johnson had 80- and 75-yard interception returns for touchdowns and Malek Redd returned kicks of 77 and 74 yards as the Hawks won their 19th straight game and continued with Wilde Lake to be the only unbeaten teams in the county at the season's midway point.
Luke Hostetler also scored rushing touchdowns of 1 and 4 yards and Campanaro added another on a 6-yard run for River Hill. The Hawks led, 27-7, at halftime. Kwasi Sarpong scored the lone touchdown for Long Reach.
River Hill travels to Reservoir for a Friday, Oct. 10 game with the Gators at 7 p.m. Long Reach plays at Atholton Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.
MARRIOTTS RIDGE 28, GLENELG 20 OT
At Glenelg, A recovered fumble for a touchdown in overtime gave Marriotts Ridge the win over Glenelg. On a fourth-down play in overtime, Marriotts Ridge quarterback Tim Blair fumbled the ball into the end zone, but it was recovered by a Mustangs' lineman to give Marriotts Ridge the lead. They then held Glenelg without scoring on its overtime attempt to seal the victory.
Glenelg tied the game at 20 in the fourth quarter when Taylor Sones caught a tipped pass from Gage Trawik and ran it in for a touchdown.
The win improves Marriotts Ridge to 4-1 on the season. Glenelg falls to 2-3 with the loss. Next week, Marriotts Ridge will host Hammond Saturday, Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m. in its homecoming game. Glenelg plays Friday, Oct. 10 against Centennial at 7 p.m.
RESERVOIR 27, OAKLAND MILLS 10
At Reservoir, Chris Morris scored three touchdowns for the Gators as Reservoir held off Oakland Mills, snapping a two-game slide.
Morris put the Gators up, 6-0, two minutes into the game with a 13-yard scoring run. His second score, a 3-yard run in the second quarter, and a two-point conversion run helped stretch the margin to 14-0. Oakland Mills answered back as sophomore Adam Reed scored on a 26-yard pass from Neko Rynn-Mason, to cut the score to 15-7. Reservoir then put the game out of reach with a 73-yard punt return for a score with 4:23 left before halftime to give the Gators a 21-7 lead. Nate Frimpong added a 39-yard field goal for Oakland Mills in the third quarter to make it 21-10, but the Scorpions would get no closer. Morris' third touchdown of the game, a 7-yard run with four minutes left, gave Reservoir the final margin of victory.
The win improved the Gators to 3-2 on the season. Oakland Mills (1-4) dropped its second in a row. The Gators go for two in a row when it hosts River Hill Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. The Scorpions will try to get back on the winning track when it hosts Mt. Hebron Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
WILDE LAKE 22, ATHOLTON 21
At Atholton, Wilde Lake turned back a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter and held on to beat the upset-minded Raiders.
Danny March scored two touchdowns and threw for another as Wilde Lake (5-0) pulled out the come-from-behind win. It was the second-straight one-point victory for the Wildecats after beating Centennial, 20-19, a week ago. Three of the Wildecats' wins this season are by three points or less. Atholton drops to 1-4 with the loss, but three of those losses came by seven points or less.
Atholton scored twice in the second quarter to take a 15-7 lead. Kory Britton caught a 6-yard TD pass from Kalvin Seamonson and then Seamonson scored on a 1-yard run to put Atholton ahead. March then tied the game at 15 whe he got loose for a 38-yard scoring run. He put Wilde Lake ahead for good, 22-15, with a 17-yard TD run. Atholton responded, moving down the field and capping a fourth-quarter drive with Seamonson's second 1-yard TDrun of the night, but failed to convert a two-point conversion which would have given Atholton the lead late in the game.
Jerrel Epps put the Wildecats ahead, 7-0, in the first quarter with an 8-yard touchdown catch from March. Epps also rushed for 101 yards in the game.
The win keeps Wilde Lake one of only two unbeaten teams in the county, with River Hill. Those two schools meet Oct. 25 at River Hill in a game which looks like it could decide the county champion. Next week, though, Wilde Lake plays host to Howard Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. The Raiders host Long Reach Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2 p.m. in its homecoming game.
HOWARD 47, HAMMOND 6
At Howard, senior Mark Covington scored twice in a 34-point first quarter as Howard scored seven rushing touchdowns and won its fourth game in a row, beating the winless Golden Bears.
Covington scored on runs of 13 and 85 yards to go along with junior A.J. Bonavitacola's 63-yard touchdown run and rushing TDs by Dionte Jones and Ronnie Murphy to lead, 34-0, after the first quarter. Howard also got a 7-yard TD run Corey Ford in the second quarter and another 7-yard score from Michael Moore in the third. Hammond avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard touchdown pass by Sam Plazak.
Howard (4-1) hasn't lost since a 21-18 loss to Centennial Sept. 5. The Lions are averaging 35.6 points per game and an even more impressive 43.6 points a game over its past three contests, all double-digit victories. Hammond (0-5) has not been able to click on offense yet this season, scoring a total of 21 points in five games. The Lions go for their fifth win in a row Friday, Oct. 10 against unbeaten Wilde Lake at 7 p.m. Hammond will try to break its losing streak Friday, Oct. 10 with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Marriotts Ridge.
