A second man has died as a result of a collision early Sunday morning in Dayton.
The man, Victor Guitierrez-Almeida, 21, believed by police to be a Westminster resident, died this morning at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore from injuries sustained in the March 1 collision.
A 20-year-old Mt. Airy man who was driving one of the vehicles involved in the crash will face charges related to Guitierrez-Almeida's death, as well as those related to the death of another one of his passengers, Westminster resident Gilberto Garcia Vasques, who died at the scene of the collision.
The collision occurred March 1 at 3:55 a.m. when Jose Rosendo Algomeda-Santiago, 20, of Mt. Airy, lost control of the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving north on Route 32, according to police. The Jetta spun 180 degrees, crossed the yellow line and was struck by a southbound Dodge 2500 Ram pickup truck that was towing a trailer of hay, police said.
Garcia Vasques was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, police said. Guitierrez-Almeida was transported to Shock Trauma where he was listed in critical condition until his death this morning.
Upon his release from Shock Trauma Sunday, the driver, Algomeda-Santiago, was charged with homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, manslaughter, driving without a license and other offenses, related to Garcia Vasques' death. Additional charges in the death of Guitierrez-Almeida are pending, Howard police said today.
Algomeda-Santiago is currently being held on $1 million bond at the Howard County Detention Center, police said.
Another passenger in the Jetta, Gonzalo Gutierrez-Molina, 25, of Westminster, was listed in serious condition Sunday.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured. Police identified him as Eric Brent Fratz, 42, of Accident, in Western Maryland.
