Water use restrictions have been lifted on residents in Howard County after a break in a water main transmission line into the county Wednesday caused a drop in the county’s supply.
Baltimore Public Works spokesman Kurt Kocher said the 36-inch main that broke shortly before dawn Wednesday was “one of the main feeds of water into Howard County.” The break occurred along Washington Boulevard in
Halethorpe, closing schools and halting MARC and Amtrak train services up and down the Penn Line on Wednesday.
As a result, Howard County residents had been asked to reduce their water usage until the problem was fixed.
County Executive Kenneth Ulman said Thursday that the county’s Department of Public Works was able to reconfigure the county’s water supply in order to meet demand. Conservation efforts by residents on Wednesday helped their efforts, he said.
“The public's cooperation yesterday was greatly appreciated,” Ulman said in a statement. “We are pleased the situation was resolved so quickly.”
The water has remained safe to drink throughout the entire incident, according to the county.
