Howard County police have charged three males in an assault and attempted shooting of a Columbia security guard Wednesday night — including one man who has been arrested five times in the past two months.

Police were called to apartments in the 8800 block of Flowerstock Row, near the Long Reach Village Center, about 9 p.m. for reports of shots fired. Once there, the officers found a 27-year-old male security guard who had been confronted by a group of young men, police said.

The guard told the officers he had been punched in the face and that one of the men had fired multiple gunshots at him, but missed.

As the guard fled, the suspects entered his security vehicle and stole money, police said.

Rick Britton, 20, of Odenton, has been charged with attempted murder in the shooting; Derrod Peterson, 18, and Darnell Furby, 16, both of Columbia, were charged with assault, both as adults.

The three were located and arrested at various residences, not their own, without incident, police said.

Britton has been charged in five different crimes over the past two months, including gambling and trespassing, according to court records.

Britton and Peterson are  currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center on no bond.  Furby is being held on a $25,000 bond.
